Sometimes when listening to black metal it is such a relief not to consider musical geek craftsmanship, then once in a while a band wants to add a tablespoon of “progressive”, and yes, we are all set to jerk off to whatever weird stuff they’ve put into the stew of black metal.
The very essence of black metal usually comes out of raw frenzy, anger, coldness, hate, narcissism, violence or Japanese porno. Musical sophisticated perfectionism is thus automatically relatively far from that essence, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be mixed. One must balance the antipodes perfectly or it will all turn into feces. Speaking of turning music into feces, that seems to be the most common strategy by bands sending stuff to us here at GD.
Code is taking a rather safe path by not incorporating that much black metal into their well executed music. Apart from the harsh vocals here and there one could’ve labeled this into whatever (in terms of metal) almost. And I’m pretty sure that this band is addressing those who seek progressive music more than those who wants their asses to burn from necrocock sodomization, the latter of which should be relatively unpleasant for those who lacks experience.
I guess the music can be seen as rather interesting since a lot of things are going on at the same time, melodies, riffs, bass-journeys, skin pounding and a variety of vocals. What is good is that it still sounds like an unity rather than chaotic ego trips by five lads. Not seldom are the vocals delivered in a most theater like way, full of (obvious) emotions which actually isn’t that disturbing despite what one might expect.
Overall there are no weak tracks on this album, however it is for me very hard to point at any track being superior or standing out in any other way. The band was nice by making a video for the track I should pick, so behold, here is Glimlight tourist yeah, it’s not like we are served tracks named “chainsaw fuck fist festival” or anything, but I can live with it, once in a while. If you are a diehard progressive (pretentious) metal fan, add a point to my final score and we are all set.
